A baby shower is one of the sweetest celebrations there is, and the invitation sets the tone. Whether you are hosting for a sister, a best friend or yourself, here is everything you need to know about baby shower invitations.
When to have the shower
Most baby showers happen four to eight weeks before the due date. That gives the parents-to-be time to sort through gifts while the expectant mom still feels comfortable enough to enjoy the party. Some families prefer a “sip and see” after the baby arrives instead.
When to send invitations
Guests should receive invitations four to six weeks before the shower. If many guests are traveling, send them a little earlier.
What to include
- The guest of honor’s name, or both parents’ names for a couples’ shower
- Date and time
- Address of the venue or home
- Host’s name
- How and when to RSVP
- Registry information, often on a separate insert card
- Theme or dress code, if there is one

Who hosts?
Traditionally, a close friend, sister, aunt or co-worker hosts the shower, though mothers and mothers-in-law often host too. Today it is also perfectly fine for parents-to-be to host their own shower, especially a casual or couples’ party.
Registry etiquette
It is fine to include registry details on an insert card or on the shower website. Keep it short and friendly, like Emma is registered at Target and Amazon. If the parents would prefer books instead of cards, that is a lovely line to add too.
Matching extras
A few coordinating pieces make the shower feel thoughtfully planned:
- Welcome sign
- Shower games, like bingo or advice cards
- Diaper raffle tickets
- Favor tags and stickers
- Thank-you cards for the parents-to-be to send afterward
Printed or digital?
Printed invitations feel personal and make a lovely keepsake. Digital invitations are quick and make RSVPs easy to track. Zazzle Events lets you send digital invitations with RSVP tracking and reminders, and you can still order a few printed copies for grandparents and the baby book.
Before you send
Double-check the date, address and names, and ask the parents-to-be to look over the guest list. Then mail your invitations, and get ready to celebrate.
